Carnia: a paradise of culture, history and life

The mountains of Friuli are a charming place to explore. They offer breathtaking colours and landscapes, as well as history, culture, traditions, food and wine connoisseurship and a world of activities.

“Al Benvenuto” is the ideal place to stay if you want  to explore our marvellous land. Tolmezzo is the gateway to Carnia: the ancient walls, the old town with its palaces and arcades, Picotta tower and the eighteenth-century Cathedral of Saint Martin are only a few, prestigious examples of local architecture and history. With its rich collection of ethnographic vestiges, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions “Michele Gortani” is not to be missed. Its exhibition is part of the “CarniaMusei” network, which extends throughout all the region with its beautiful gems that meet different tastes and passions:  sacred art at the art exhibition of Illegio, contemporary art at the ArtPark of Verzegnis, geology and fossils  in Ampezzo and Preone, music and the Mozartian private collections in Paularo, the open air itinerary in the village of clocks, Pesariis, and the archaeology of the sites of Zuglio. The museums and exhibitions offer a wide range of cultural events paying particular attention to the younger visitors with the events organized by BimbinMuseo over the summer.

Carnia offers a wide range of possibilities for active life lovers and sportsmen.  From the charming walks for the whole family amid pure and unblemished places to more demanding treks which will guide you to the discovery of the Dolomites (UNESCO World Heritage), of mountain shelters and shepherd’s huts, or of traces of the Great War along the tracks of the Pal Piccolo mountain.

Canoeing and rock climbing will make of your summer holidays an unforgettable experience. Families with children will be able to practise activities  such as horse riding , laboratories, visits to farms or adventuring at the Dolomiti Adventure Park in Forni di Sopra.

Cycling lovers will find numerous places to explore and paths to follow, not least the demanding yet exciting Mount Zoncolan, one of the most complex stages of the Giro d’Italia.

Mount Zoncolan is undisputed protagonist of the winter season, too, with breathtaking views on an amphitheatre of majestic peaks and with its modern ski resort. Amid this beautiful scenery it is also possible to practise cross-country skiing  and Nordic walking or taking part to guided excursions with the snow cat or snow shoes.

The border land Carnia has always been a land of transit and passage, with its roads winding through woods and valleys across villages inhabited by hospitable, hard-working and happy people. Bikers too will fall in love with this unique land.

Numerous events, in particular about food and craftsmanship, are scattered throughout the year to liven up the mountain villages which become places of encounter and exchange. Among the main events we find the Festival of Spring Herbs in Forni di Sopra, the Festival of Ham in Sauris, the market-exhibition of cheeses in Enemonzo, the Festival of Wild berries in Forni Avoltri, the Festival of the Shepherd in Ovaro, the Festival of Apples in Tolmezzo, as well as the evocative “Mistirs” of Paularo and “Magia del legno” (open-air wood art exhibition) in Sutrio.

Suspended in time, Carnia is a land rich of authentic values, genuine people and pure and silent landscapes, where one can relax and devote  their passions and well-being. Nestling in a corner of paradise, Carnia is a place that awaits to be discovered and explored.
